Day 37 - Quick visit to the ER

Ryan just never makes things easy.

So, this morning, around 2:30 am, as Patrick was getting ready for bed, Ryan decided to spike a fever.  He got as high as 102 (38.8), so we immediately called the Oncology Fellow on call.  They had us bring him into the ER to see what was going on.  By the time we got to the ER, he dropped down to 100.1, so they weren't that concerned.  The doctors explained that sometimes Ryan might spike a fever simply as a side effect of his meds.  They took cultures and checked his blood numbers.  As he wasn't neutropinic (ANC was 1880), around 4:30, they told us to give him some Tylenol and go home.

This was a very strange reaction for us, as we are not used to going into the ER for a fever and NOT getting admitted.  But we were grateful and enjoyed the rest of our Sunday at home.  (Clinic is tomorrow).

In addition, we've been having some edema (swelling of his feet and face).  We think that this might be because of the very high dose of Lovenox we are giving him.  We called the Fellow again (at a more reasonable time of 10 am), and asked about the Lovenox.  She called the Pharmacy, and we decided to hold his Lovenox dose for the rest of Sunday, to see if the swelling and fever go down.  The swelling is so bad that he is struggling to walk.  We might try to find a medical way to help his swelling (Lasix, albumin, etc.), but we'll have to see what the doctors decide tomorrow.

Our first clinic visit will be tomorrow morning, where we will get acquainted with the out-patient oncology clinic team.  These people will be taking care of us for the next 8 months, so we're kind of excited to meet them.  (of course, I won't be there...)

And, around 9 pm, I hopped a plane to come home to Great Falls.  It's always good to see my kids and sleep in my own bed, but of course, I have 'mom guilt' about leaving Ryan.  Fortunately, I know he is in good hands with Patrick.  And Grandma and Grandpa should be there tomorrow afternoon, to add just a little more emotional support.  I'll be here for the next 2-3 weeks, so I'll be back to getting nightly reports from Patrick.  But, at least the apartment is a little more livable, and I'm more aware of what is going on over there...

Thank you all for the love and support.  And thank you for the prayers and good thoughts!

(ps... sorry, I forgot to get a picture today... I'll make sure to get a new one tomorrow)
