Day 9 - Back in-patient

So, Ryan spiked another fever last night (38.9, so about 102), so Patrick brought him back into the ER.  His blood counts were really low (hematocrit was down to 18, which is even low for Ryan), so they decided to admit him and give him some blood.  They also started him on antibiotics (Meropenum and Vanco), just in case it's actually a bug growing.

As of this afternoon, he is feeling much better.  He got his afternoon chemo, got a transfusion of blood, and had some IV anti-nausea meds.  The doctors said that his chemo could totally be causing the fevers and the low blood numbers, so we should expect that he'll start feeling better after Friday (his last chemo dose for 2 weeks).

Tomorrow (Thursday), he will get his last spinal tap for a while, which I'm sure will be great.  And then Friday will be the last chemo dose for a few weeks.  Everyone is really pleased with how he's doing, in spite of the ER visits and inpatient days.  Patrick has been great about calling and bringing him in if he even starts to look funky.

The docs are planning on keeping him inpatient through Friday, unless he spikes another fever.  His ANC is also down (about 750 from 1500), so that makes them a little more cautious.  The spinal tap on Thursday is an add-on, so it's just easier to keep in inpatient, so we don't have to wait around all day.  He's feeling good now, and we are just holding out breath for the next few days.

Thank you all for the prayers and good thoughts!!

  1. I can't blame Patrick for being cautious, like I said I usually error on the side of caution--especially when it is the health of your child!! I know you agree :) sounds like an awesome medical team to work with!!!
I don't know if this shows the hour, but it is after 1 am, but I just got back from getting Mary off the midnight plane, and of course had to check emails and fb!!
