Day 178 - Pumpkin Pie

Like most things, there is a story here.  Patrick mom (Ann) makes the best pumpkin pie in the world.  Just saying... And every time Patrick has a 'store bought' pumpkin pie, he complains on how bad it is.

When I told him that he had to go out yesterday and 'do something... anything', he decided that he and Ryan were going to make Grandma's pumpkin pie.  Of course, as we just have the 'essentials' at the apartment, he didn't have a mixer (obviously, my KitchenAid is here).  He didn't have a pie pan, or that cool little metal thing you use to blend in the butter into flour, or a rolling pin, or the half-dozen spices that Grandma uses.  Needless to say, he decided it was worth it for the pie, so he made a list and purchased the items he needed.

This morning, he made a point of cleaning up the kitchen before they began (which common sense says is silly, but that's just me).  He then called me, to let me know they were beginning.  Oh, and how do you get a half of an egg?  And how much is 2/3 of a Tablespoon?  And when you measure flour, do you pack it or just scrape the top off the measuring cup?  And (my favorite), is this pie crust too thick?  (like I can see over the phone..)

I got a play-by-play for 2 solid hours of their adventure in the kitchen... But, in the end, he had a pumpkin pie, that was pretty awesome.  He shared with his neighbor, who declared that it was the best pie she ever had, and could she have an extra piece to share with her boyfriend.  He was so adorably proud of himself.

It's days like today that let me know that we are going to get through this year.  I have days where I wonder, but knowing that the boys are baking pies makes it so much easier.

Thank you all for the continued prayers and good thoughts!  (And a big thank you for those who supported me yesterday... sometimes I have rough days...)

  1. wow, well now that they know they can make a great pumpkin pie (and now have all the necessary equipment) they can make more kinds of pies :) bet they were pretty proud of themselves--and they should be. I can imagine the questions over the phone!!!
AND yes there are the ups and downs of any life, but your family has survived some pretty big bumps and you will continue to do so because there are so many of us praying for all of you to have the strength to get through all the bumps in the road. (you are entitled to an emotional melt down once in a while, probably more than you actually have) LUV U all
