Day 233 - Well...
I got a call from Patrick early this morning. Ryan had been pretty warm last night, so he spent most of the night checking Ryan's temperature. Around 5am, he finally spiked above 101, which means that we bring him into the ER. While there, his temp kept going higher. They gave him fluids and Tylenol, but he kept getting warmer. Around 7am, he really spiked, up above 106. Patrick and the nurses put cold packs on him, to get his temp back down, which worked (thank goodness!). But, needless to say, we decided to have him admitted.
He tested positive for Influenza A, which is probably beating up a few people right now. But, of course, with the chemo meds this week, Ryan has no ability to deal with it. We got him upstairs to his room, and got his temperature under control (it's hanging around 100-101 now). They started him on antibiotics, in the off chance that it's a bacteria infection. Patrick headed back to the apartment to catch a few hours of sleep, since the nurses said they would let us know if Ryan needed anything. (he's so much more independent now!)
Patrick called around 8pm tonight and let me know that he also tested positive for Gram Negative Rods (Ryan's infection of choice would be either E.coli or Klebsiella), but at this point we don't have a definite bug. Either way, they've changed antibiotics to Gentamycin (one of his antibiotics of choice to go with his bug of choice), and he's resting peacefully. He's awfully puffy, but that's probably from the extra fluid they give him to keep him hydrated. We're also keeping an eye on his liver numbers (Patrick said he's kind of yellow, which is usually a sign that his liver is not happy)
The good news is that he is in the best place right now. The doctors and nurses are watching him like a hawk, and while he still feels pretty crappy, he's resting (somewhat peacefully) and getting the care he needs.
I told Patrick to head back to the apartment tonight, and try to get some rest. The nurses agreed, insisting that they would call if there was anything Ryan needed or any change at all. Patrick brought over the Xbox and Ryan's Surface, so he has more than enough to keep him entertained, in the off chance that he feels better. But we are all hoping that he will just rest and feel better.
The Oncologists explained that pretty much anyone who had his high doses of chemo and picked up the flu would react like this. Not that they are unconcerned, just that they are not surprised. I'm sure we will delay his next dose at least until he feels better. Hopefully, I'll have more news tomorrow!
Please continue to keep him in your prayers and thoughts tonight.
